Globe, Arizona

The old Gila County Courthouse is now home to the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. This building was actually the second county courthouse built on this site. The original courthouse, completed in September 1888, was evidently inadequate to begin with. By March, 1907, a new building was completed and housed the courts on the third floor, the administrative offices on the second floor, and the jail and Sheriff's office on the ground floor. As with the original courthouse, the new one proved inadequate from the start. Major remodeling took place in March of 1909; and in November 1909 construction began on a new jail building located directly east of the courthouse. The old Gila County Jail is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to noon.
